It is a place for all believers and those who seek to know the Lord. The church”s ministries and departments are varied -children’s, youth, young adults, adults and seniors; and inclusive of all its members.
Metropolitan grew out of the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church that began in 1911. The members worshipped in a storeroom at the northeast corner of High and Guinnotte streets. In April 1912, the membership purchased property at 1805 Woodland Avenue as their worship place. The congregation worshiped there until 1945 when a second fire destroyed the structure. After this fire, the members worshiped on the second floor of Lyric Hall at 1731 Lydia.
On June 8, 1948, the membership purchased the church at 2844 Prospect Avenue. On January 22, 1978, the current edifice was dedicated and the congregation marched from their old church into their new sanctuary and current location at 2828 Prospect Avenue.
Our approach

Our Mission
The mission of the AME Zion church is to increase our love for God and to help meet the needs of humankind by “Loving God with all of our heart, with all of our soul and with our entire mind; and to love our neighbor as ourselves.”
Our Vision
We want to build a world where no child or youth feels alone and gets every possible help they need as soon as possible.

The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church professes the historical faith in God, who by Himself – outpouring was manifest, incarnate in Jesus Christ for our salvation. By God’s grace and the power of His Holy Spirit, all humanity become the new humanity.
Our Heritage The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, or the AME Zion Church is a historically African-American Protestant denomination based in the United States. It is also known as the Freedom Church. It developed from a congregation formed by a group of free Blacks who in 1796 left the John Street Methodist Church in New York City because of discrimination. It was officially formed in 1821 in New York City, but the foundation for Zion’s founding began in the late 1770’s. It adopted its present name in 1848. The church is Methodist in doctrine and church government.
